The Top Innovative Turkish Universities 2013

The top 50 of Turkey's most entrepreneurial and innovative universities have been announced. While Sabanci University is ranked the first in the list, Middle East Technical University, Bilkent, Ozyegin and ITU takes place within the first 5. In the list where no university receives 100 full points, 42 out of 168 universities across the country were excluded from the evaluation.

126 universities competed to get into the index. However, only 50 universities were able to enter the rankings. Given no 100 full points, Sabancı University is the first with 84 points, Middle East Technical University was the second with 83 points. Galatasaray University and Abant Izzet Baysal University managed to enter the index from the last rows with 22 points. Although Sabanci University is ranked the first, it is interesting to see that the 35 out of 50 universities are state universities.

Starting from the next year before making university preferences, this index will be announced by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

While preparing the index, the value of each indicator is divided by the sum of the university's faculty members, Nihat Ergun the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology tells, as to evaluate universities with different sizes on the same scale.

The Minister Ergun says, if they didn't make such a weighted average calculation, universities with more scholars would naturally get the first place. 42 universities where the number of faculty members is less than 50 were not included in the calculation, as soon as they reach this threshold they could be in the index evaluation, he stressed.

Also noted that advanced countries owe their success most to the universities, Ergun added: "We are well aware of this fact and are taking steps to improve our universities, both quantitatively and qualitatively."

In 2002, 41 of our 81 provinces had no university, now there is no city left without a university. Again, in 2002 when there were 76 universities, 92 new universities have been established since 2003.
